Organized Office-Simplified Work Style

By Figen Genco, BA

You walk into your office. What you see makes want to scream, run out and never come back. How can you expect to be productive in such an environment?

Whether you own a small business or work for a corporation, your success is directly associated with your personal work habits, your surroundings and the systems you use.

A good system doesn’t need to be complicated. Creating practical and functioning system starts with self-observation. Finding out what is working and what is not working for you is the first step in getting organized.

Signs of Need For Organizational Help

  • Piles of paper on the desk, window sills, maybe on the chairs and floor
  • Constant search for papers
  • Missed appointments
  • Forgetting to return phone calls
  • Losing documents, notes, contact information
  • Never having enough time
  • Having time but not doing what you are supposed to do
  • Copying the same documents again and again
  • Not knowing what’s in your filing drawer
  • Getting exhausted without much accomplishment
  • Feeling overwhelmed, guilty and hopeless

If any of signs above describe you, you might consider spending some time to understand where the problems originate.

Where To Start

Take 15 minutes. Read the below questions, then look around in your office and think. (Here are the things to consider: desk top, filing system-if there is one, filing cabinet, folders, planner, bulletin board, inbox, to do list, space, lay-out of furniture, technological devices and office items, computer desktop, computer files and email, getting bored, getting overwhelmed.)

Now, get a piece of paper and write your answers:

  • What is working for you?
  • What is not working for you?
  • What areas do you want to get organized?
  • What is causing the problems?

Once you find out the actual reason of the problem, you can work towards the solution. Time management problems originate from disorganization and misuse of space and organizing tools. Procrastination initiates from lack of planning and scheduling skills and tools as well as not understanding the way to work the to do lists. Often there is a very easy solution to a situation, which you think is hopeless. Understanding your personality, habits and knowing what you can do with your space is the key.

A professional organizer can help you discover the best systems and organizational tools for your personality, working style and work area. Being organized saves you time, energy and money.
